Voluntary Contributions of Plastic Bag Fee Proceeds

Committee Recommendations

The Executive Committee recommends that:

 

1.         City Council declare the Plastic Bag Fee program a success and rescind the Plastic Bag Fee Bylaw effective July 1, 2012.

 

2.         City Council request the Director of Toronto Office of Partnerships, in consultation with the Director of Strategic Communications and the General Manager, Parks, Forestry and Recreation, to prepare a communications strategy encouraging major retailers in the City of Toronto to consider donating a portion of their bag fee profits to the City of Toronto's tree canopy program.

 

3.         City Council direct that, as part of the communications strategy, retailers be requested to display in a conspicuous location in their stores, how much they are contributing of the plastic bag fee to the tree canopy program.

Summary

As per direction from the Executive Committee, the purpose of this report is to address the potential for businesses to donate a portion of the net proceeds from the five cent plastic bag fee toward the protection of the City's tree canopy.

 

Staff  recommend that major retailers and issuers of bags be requested to make voluntary contributions towards protection of the City's tree canopy as part of the City's donation program managed by the Toronto Office of Partnerships.
