Committee Decision

The Public Works and Infrastructure Committee referred the item to the Acting General Manager, Transportation Services, for a report back to the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee meeting on June 14, 2012.

Origin

(April 16, 2012) Member Motion from Councillor Adam Vaughan, seconded by Councillor Shelley Carroll

Summary

Numerous requests from the public have been made to the City of Toronto to purchase decommissioned street name signs. Cities, such as the City of Ottawa, currently have a system whereby they retain and catalogue their decommissioned street name signs.  Street name signs are then made available to the public.

A similar system can be established for the City of Toronto where signs that are removed from the field can be made available for purchase by the public.  Only signs that do not present a danger by not having sharp edges or extreme rust would be retained for a reasonable time.  To cover the cost of labour to manage the system and funds that would have been received if the decommissioned street name signs were recycled for scrap metal, we recommend that the purchase price per sign be $20.00.
