Origin
Summary
In the 1990's consideration was given to moving the Mimico GO Train Station to the vicinity of Parklawn Road to align with plans for redevelopment and other infrastructure projects contemplated in the area. No action was taken at that time.
Since that time the area has experienced explosive, and not fully planned for residential growth in the Humber Bay Shores neighbourhood. A new Secondary Plan is currently being contemplated for the Mimico Apartment neighbourhood immediately to the east of Parklawn Road and significant other developments are being built or proposed in the south Etobicoke and Swansea neighbourhoods.
Residents continually identify mobility and poor access to rapid public transit as key issues in the area.
In the fall of 2012 Mondolez, the owners of a 24 acre parcel of land at Parklawn Road and Lake Shore Blvd. announced the future closure and sale of their bakery in this designated Employment Area. The City is considering how to address the retention and revitalization of this site to continue and grow employment in the area.
The current location of the Mimico GO Train Station is approximately 1.5 kilometres to the west. Its location is historic as it was tied to the site of the old Mimico Train Station. The current location is not terribly well suited to expansion or proximity to any growth or employment areas.
The City of Toronto should be a leader in ensuring that planning for growth, mobility, and transit are fully integrated.
I respectfully submit this to Committee for consideration,
