Summary

As two of the local Councillors representing the communities surrounding the Belt Line Trail Park, Councillor Mihevc and I have been approached by many trail users about their concerns regarding the lack of safe crossings where the trail meets Oriole Parkway, Avenue Road and Bathurst Street.

Currently there is no safe crossing point that allows the trail to be truly contiguous, and follow most residents preferred paths.

We are requesting transportation services staff, report back to Toronto and East York Community Council with viable options to install signalized crossings at each of these locations that are synchronized with the existing signalized intersections at Chaplin Crescent and Oriole Parkway, Chaplin Crescent and Avenue Road and Roselawn Avenue and Bathurst Street.

Included in this report, we are requesting that staff examine how these signalized crossings can be implemented at these locations with as minimal impact as possible on traffic flow, and what other steps can be taken to enhance safety for residents, whether they be cyclists, wheel chair users, young parents with strollers or any other type of pedestrian at these crossings.

We are requesting staff to report back to this committee at the March 2013 meeting.
