Origin
Summary
Multiple units in the building at 235 Augusta Avenue and 200-206 Baldwin Street have been posted for lease by a commercial realtor, who has proposed the option of combining several units into a single retail use. This has raised significant concern in the community about the changing nature of the size and character of the businesses in the market.
This is a prominent corner in the heart of Kensington Market and has been characterized for many years by the small retail floorplates of the businesses in the building. Part of the uniqueness of Kensington Market in our city has been its ability to act as an incubator for small businesses to emerge and grow, fostered in part by the small and affordable commercial rents.
I would like to request that Heritage Preservation Services conduct a review of this property to determine its heritage value, and review in particular the retail floorplate sizes as part of its cultural heritage significance.
A nomination for a Heritage Conservation District study is currently being prepared by the Kensington Market BIA, and it is anticipated that the cultural heritage of this neighbourhood, including the small sized retail floorplates of many businesses, will be a focus of this nomination and study.
