Community Council Decision
The Toronto East York Community Council reduced the speed limit from 50 km/h to 40 km/h on Dawes Road between Danforth Avenue and Victoria Park Avenue, and authorized the appropriate City staff to take the necessary action to implement the reduction in the speed limit.

Summary
My office has received consistent complaints about speeding activity along Dawes Road between Danforth Avenue and Victoria Park Avenue. This minor arterial road travels through residential neighbourhoods with many children walking to school and parks, and local facilities such as a senior's residence and library. Both the park and library directly abutt Dawes Road, and many pedestrians cross the road from transit stops to numerous apartment buildings along Dawes. The current speed limit is 50 km/hr.
This road also includes a bike lane, and a new pedestrian crossing at Beth Street, with another crossing recently approved at Goodwood Part Court. A speed reduction will greatly improve the safety of cyclists and those crossing at these locations. This speed reduction is a necessary step in order to reduce the risk of injury and fatalities to pedestrians and cyclists as they travel through the community. Studies conducted by Transportation Services in 2010 found sections of Dawes Road had an 85th percentile speed of 50km/hr.
