Summary

The purpose of this motion is to request an urgent review of the safety and operation standards currently present at the Keele Street and Calvington Drive intersection.

York Centre continues to mourn the outcome of a tragic crash at the corner of Keele Street and Calvington Drive. Early Sunday June 7th, a teenager lost her life while her sister sustained injuries when a vehicle turning left bound into Calvington Dr., failed to yield to the crossing pedestrians. The driver remains in police custody while investigations continue to determine the cause of the collision.

We take traffic safety concerns very seriously and we continue to strive to improve our roads and neighbourhoods to become as safe as possible. Regardless of the preliminary causes leading to the aforementioned tragic incident we believe Transportation Services staff should conduct a complete review of the intersection and improve its safety if possible. This review could include assessing street lighting, adjusting traffic light timing and synchronization, repairing and updating traffic signs and studying the feasibility of installing advance green traffic lights.
