CC10.8 - Appointment of Members to the Build Toronto Board

City Council Decision

City Council on November 3 and 4, 2015, adopted the following:

 

1.  City Council appoint the following candidates to the Build Toronto Board, at pleasure of Council, for a term of office ending on November 5, 2016 and until successors are appointed:

 

- Nancy Cohen

- Wayne Fraser

- Moshe Wertheim

 

2.  City Council appoint the following candidates to the Build Toronto Board, at pleasure of Council, for a term of office ending on November 5, 2017 and until successors are appointed:

 

- Michael Bernstein

- Dennis Fotinos

- Peter Sharpe

- Walied Soliman

- Audrey Wubbenhorst

 

3.  City Council appoint current Build Toronto Board member, Councillor David Shiner, as Chair of Build Toronto on an interim basis until the completion of the consolidated real estate review currently being undertaken by the City Manager.

 

4. City Council direct that the confidential information contained in Confidential Attachments 1, 2, 3 and 4 remain confidential in their entirety as they relate to personal matters about identifiable individuals being considered for appointment to the Build Toronto Board.

 

Confidential Attachments 1 and 2 to the report (October 14, 2015) from the City Clerk and Confidential Attachments 3 and 4 remain confidential in their entirety in accordance with the provisions of the City of Toronto Act, 2006, as they relate to personal matters about identifiable individuals being considered for appointment to the Build Toronto Board.

Public Appointees' Biographies:

 

Michael Bernstein

 

Michael Bernstein is the President and CEO at Capstone Infrastructure Corporation, where he is responsible for the company's portfolio management of power infrastructure and utilities businesses in Canada and internationally. He has extensive experience in the infrastructure sector as an executive, investor, and advisor to the private and public sectors. Michael is the Chair of the Ivey Alumni Network and the Association of Power Producers of Ontario. He has a BA in Philosophy and Economics, an MBA, and the CFA and ICD.D designations, and has served on the Build Toronto Board since 2013.

 

Nancy Cohen

 

Nancy Cohen holds a Bachelor of Architecture, a Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies, and a Bachelor of Science. She currently works as a Managing Director with Cushman & Wakefield’s Global Occupier Services and leads the Strategic Planning Group, whose focus is occupancy analysis, strategy development, workplace transformation, facilitating engagement, change management strategies, and sustainability. She has served on the Build Toronto Board since 2013 and was a member of other boards in the past, including the Ontario Association of Architects.

 

Dennis Fotinos

 

Dennis Fotinos has a BA in International Relations from the University of Toronto and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management/Schulich School of Business. From 1991-99, he was an elected member of regional and local governments at the City of Toronto, where he chaired and served on several committees, agencies, boards, and commissions. Currently, he is the President and CEO at Enwave, where he is responsible for the strategic direction and daily oversight of the company’s overall operations, including sales, business development, and major construction projects.

 

Wayne Fraser

 

Wayne Fraser is the President and Principal of Hudson Realty Advisors Limited, and has 40 years of experience in Canadian and international property markets. Prior to founding Hudson in 2006, he worked for 17 years at the Oxford Properties Group as the Senior Vice President, Acquisitions and the Senior Vice President, Corporate Development. Wayne is a keystone member of the Association of Foreign Investors and previously served on the board of the Cadillac Fairview Corporation. He has an MBA from Western University and a BA from the State University of New York.

 

Peter Sharpe

 

Peter Sharpe has an Honours Degree in Economics and Business Administration from Waterloo Lutheran University. Until his retirement in 2011, he was the President and CEO for Cadillac Fairview for more than 10 years. Peter's extensive real estate career includes positions with Marathon Realty Company, York Hannover, and Fidinam. He has served on various boards, including the Building Owners and Managers Association of Canada and the Real Property Association of Canada, where he served as President.

 

Walied Soliman

 

Walied Soliman graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2001. He currently works as a corporate lawyer and partner at Norton Rose Fulbright LLP, where he focuses on mergers, acquisitions, and corporate governance. Walied enjoys volunteering in the local community in various ways. Currently, he is a member of the Sick Kids Hospital Foundation Board, and is involved with numerous other community-based initiatives.

 

Moshe Wertheim

 

Moshe Wertheim is a Professional Engineer who leads his own practice at Wertheim Consulting Inc., a company that advises and supports owners/developers in the real estate industry. As a real estate executive with over 38 years of experience, Moshe is accomplished in all facets of development, including design, contracting, construction, and operations, with a specialization in sustainability. He has served on the Build Toronto Board since June 2013 and other boards, including Building Owners and Managers Association of Canada and the Technical Safety & Standards Authority.

 

Audrey Wubbenhorst

 

Audrey Wubbenhorst has an Honours BA, an MA in Communications and Culture, and an MBA. She currently works as the Vice President for the Canadian Board Diversity Council, an organization that advances diversity on Canada's boards. Prior to that, Audrey was with the BMO Financial Group for more than 12 years, where she worked in various areas, including diversity and workplace equity, human resources, and communications before becoming a Director in Real Estate Finance. She has a range of board experiences, including as a member of the Toronto Community Housing Board.

 

City Council, by adopting Motion MM10.14, amended the composition of the Build Toronto Board of Directors to allow either a public member or a Member of Council to serve as Chair.
